ROSE
HILL
I
grew up in Macon, Georgia. Macon doesn't have some things
larger places have, but one thing it DOES have is the best
cemetery I've ever seen. I've heard Paris has some rockin'
dead people, but for my money, Rose Hill in Macon wins the
prize.
I
was home a year or so ago, and I decided to spend an afternoon
at Rose Hill. While I was there, I took these pictures. It's
pretty much the way I remember it, except that it's falling
apart more than it was when I lived in Macon.
I
have mixed feelings about the disrepair there. It's really
a shame that one of the most significant historic sites in
middle Georgia is falling apart, but, on the other hand, what
in our world stands for our very existence of change and decay
better than a decrepit cemetary. I hate seeing the headstones
broken and the grass left unmowed, but it sure would make
a great set for a Hammer horror movie.
I
wandered around the graves for hours, and never saw another
person. At least not a LIVING person. I saw graves that I'd
never seen before, and they told me stories. If you're ever
passing through Georgia on I-75, you should stop by and listen
to a few of those stories too.
There
aren't many celebrities buried there, except for the occasional
Allman Brother (in fact, there are pictures taken at this
cemetary on the back of one of the early Allman records),
but the people who are there can still speak volumes. Listen.
